This is where I live.

View of Northstar from single track trail

Okay. I took this picture from my phone, because I wanted to capture the moment and the beauty of what I saw. I was suddenly struck by a feeling of awe and appreciation. It was Mother’s Day and my husband let me go mountain biking by myself after cooking a pretty awesome breakfast for me. This is the ride that is out my back door and I love it. I passed nobody and did not cross one patch of snow. It was a surprise and a blessing. Other than climbing over a few down trees (as to be expected this time of year after a winter of storms and wind) it was a perfect ride and yet another moment where I have confirmed why it is I live here. Because it is awesome.

Author David Sedaris is as funny live as he is in print

This past Thursday I flew to Los Angeles where my brother Matt lives to hear author David Sedaris speak at UCLA’s Royce Hall.

Matt and I had been looking forward to seeing Sedaris for months, and were so excited when we arrived, we could barely sit still in our wooden seats. The place was packed, and the crowd was anxious to see this funny man whose self-deprecating tales of his family, his travels, and his past employment have made many (including myself) laugh so hard that we were crying and gasping for air. (If you don’t believe me, read the chapter titled “The Little Buddy” in Me Talk Pretty One Day and see what happens…)

Me sniffing things that bloom in Venice Beach

I am not a huge fan of Southern California but had a nice time strolling around Santa Monica window shopping, as well as dining at fantastic restaurants that I would otherwise not get to go. We were able to get a much-coveted reservation at Mozza Pizzaria which was quite possibly the best pizza I have ever tasted; light, thin-crusted until you bite into it and I swear it then converted into a garlicky-olivey doughy heaven.

The next day after more shopping, we went to possibly the other best pizza I have ever had at Abbots Pizza in Venice Beach. Their signature slice is the salad pizza, which I was skeptical about at first, but my brother assured me that I would be pleasantly surprised. And I was. Made with a bagel crust and layered with a chopped romaine salad and lightly tossed with a vinaigrette dressing and avocado slices, this pizza was delicious and healthy (I want to think).

Aside from eating and shopping and seeing David Sedaris, I also went to the Getty Villa in Malibu. This estate has stunning ocean views, breathtaking gardens, and a worthy art collection from around the world. The admission is also free except the $10 parking. And yet, it seemed to fall flat. I don’t know why. My brother and I love museums, and love really beautiful estates to wander around, and yet something about this beautiful place was boring.

Anyway, if you need to get out of the mountains and get some moist ocean air, see gardens blooming, and have about  a million different restaurant choices, Los Angeles is a short flight south.
